The love life of a jaguar in Delhi Zoo has been cut short because he is a little too portly, according to his keepers. On loan to the zoo from the Indian state of Kerala, the Indian Express reports that hes being sent back because hes not fulfilling that purpose of breeding with their female jaguar. He is lazy, a glutton, just loves to eat and relax, said one of the jaguar keepers.
The chubbycat, called Salman, is being returnedafter attempts to breed him with the resident female for the last year have failed. The female is seen trying to entice him but he lies in a corner and refuses to respond, Delhi zoo curator Riaz Khan, told The Indian Express. He is too fat to breed.
According to the zoo, they feed all four of their jaguars 6 kilograms (13 pounds) of buffalo meat a day, but Salman is the only one to polish it all off, with officials lamenting that he has a bigger appetite than even the tigers. They apparently tried putting him on a diet once but to no avail, and so returned him back to his full-on suppers of buffalo.
When the dieting failed (and I think most of us can relate to that), they tried to give him a bigger enclosure in the hope he might run around a bit more, but even that didnt work. He would stroll for a bit, then lie in a corner, said his keeper. All thats leftto do, then, is to send him back. Poor Salman.
But it might not be all Salmans fault, as apparently the two other male jaguars kept at the zoo have also failed to sire any cubs. Being moved from one zoo to another can be a stressful ordeal, and may simply have put him off his A-game. Or maybe he’s just carrying a littleextra fur.
Hes not alone, however, in the terms of male big cats not being able to perform. Earlier this year, there were reports of a male white tiger in West Bengal who was also having problems getting on with it, despite having all the stops pulled out by being dewormed and given libido enhancers. PerhapsSalman will have more luck with the ladies when he’s sent back to his old home.
